Online Gambling is defined as any gambling activity which involves the use of the internet and does not include Video Lottery Terminals (VLT). It is a fast growing industry and it can be very tempting to gamble from the comfort of your own home. However, there are some important things to consider before you start.
There are a number of factors that increase the risk of online gambling addiction. These include: 1). Genetic predisposition: a person’s inherited traits can play a role in their vulnerability to develop an addiction to online gambling. A 2017 meta-analysis of twin studies by Xuan et al titled, “Genetic and Environmental Influences on Gambling Behavior,” found that gambling behavior is moderately heritable.
2). Environmental factors: Easy access to gambling products and services, which is often facilitated by the internet and mobile devices increases risks. This is particularly true for people living in areas of higher social disadvantage. Advertising and promotional activities also contribute to the uptake of gambling products.
3). Behavioral influences: gambling is often associated with a range of unhealthy behaviors, such as substance misuse and mental health problems. It is also linked to the development of a gambling disorder, which has been characterized by the American Psychiatric Association as a mental illness.
4). Reward system dysregulation: gambling activates the brain’s reward pathways, causing feelings of pleasure and excitement similar to those caused by drugs or alcohol. This reactivity can lead to compulsive gambling behaviors.
