Poker is a card game where players wager money against each other. The goal is to extract the most value from winning hands and minimise losses from losing ones. This is known as the min-max strategy. The best poker players use a range of techniques, including bluffing and information-gathering to exploit their opponents. Moreover, the game is an excellent way to develop a number of other skills, from learning how to calculate probabilities and make decisions under uncertainty to improving focus and discipline.

The game begins with two mandatory bets, called blinds, put into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. The dealer shuffles and then deals the cards, face-up or face-down depending on the game variant. Each player then has the option to check, call or raise the bets. Players can also discard their cards and take new ones. The player with the best hand wins the pot of money.

Despite the seemingly complicated rules and strategies, Poker is a very simple game. The key is to play with the right expectations, which includes understanding that you will have some bad hands and that your success will mostly be the result of luck (i.e. Min-Max). This is similar to life, where you will be successful when you make the right choices under uncertainty and when you weigh up your chances of success with each decision you make. The ability to do this is what makes successful people so successful in their lives, and it is what poker can teach you.
